Open the fleet list of any rental company and you will usually see three or four categories: economy, standard, business or luxury, sometimes SUV and minivan as well. The one in the middle, "standard", is the vaguest at first glance and, at the same time, the category most cars are rented from. Below we explain what falls into it, what does not, and how to tell whether it is the right pick for your trip.
The short definition
A standard car is a compact or mid-size sedan, hatchback or estate with 5 seats, a 1.4 to 2.0 litre engine, built by a mainstream brand (Toyota, Hyundai, Kia, Skoda, Volkswagen, Renault and the like). It is not the cheapest car in the fleet, but you are not paying for a premium badge either. Put simply, it is the car you would buy for the family if you had to be sensible.
Standard versus economy and luxury
- Economy: small city cars, 1.0 to 1.2 litre engines, limited boot space, ideal for one person or a couple getting around Chisinau.
- Standard: room for 4 or 5 adults and their luggage, enough engine for long drives, air conditioning and modern equipment as the norm rather than an option.
- Business and luxury: premium brands, big engines, leather, advanced driver assistance; you pay for comfort and image, not for extra functionality.
What you usually get in a standard car
Air conditioning or climate control, Bluetooth and USB, often Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, parking sensors or a reversing camera, cruise control. Newer models add emergency braking or lane-departure warning. The gearbox can be manual or automatic, so check that detail when booking if you have a preference.
When it is the right choice
Trips across the country
The Chisinau to Soroca or Chisinau to Cahul road with four people on board calls for an engine with something in reserve and a suspension that does not wear passengers out. An economy car can manage it; a standard car does it comfortably.
Business travel
For a client visit, a clean, recent standard car looks professional without appearing showy. It is in fact the category companies rent most often for their staff.
Families
Two child seats fit in the back, the pushchair goes in the boot and fuel consumption stays reasonable: standard is the right compromise between space and budget.
When it is not
If you need more than five seats, go straight to a minivan. If you are heading down unpaved roads to a guesthouse or a winery, an SUV with more ground clearance is a better fit. And if you are only moving around the city on your own, an economy car does the same job at a lower daily rate.
